Hello, I’m Laura Amos, and creating moments of happiness through lovingly handmade food, using the finest ingredients & plenty of them, is my passion.
I launched The Dessert Deli in 2008, with a desire to bring ‘absolutely amazing’ desserts to food lovers at an affordable price. Today, I am pleased to have created a successful business with a loyal following, that has never forgotten this goal.
My food journey began as a Catering student at Bournemouth and Poole College where, at the age of sixteen, I won ‘Student of the Year’ and the opportunity work under Michelin starred chef, Jean-Christophe Novelli.
The placement was demanding and fast-paced, but my hard work was recognised, and lead to my first full-time job offer, running the pastry sections of J.C’s prestigious, fine-dining restaurants.
The move from my home in the Dorset countryside to the vast city of London, to work long hours in tough, male-dominated underground kitchens, was one of the hardest experiences of my life. But I was determined to succeed, eager to learn, and I had caught the bug for London’s exciting food scene where top ingredients were readily available, so I never looked back.
During my early career, I was fortunate to work with many great and respected chefs. Despite the challenging environments, I worked my way through the ranks of several prestigious establishments, from Sous Pastry Chef at The Ivy, to Head Pastry Chef at Le Caprice, and Head Chef at the award-winning artisan bakery, Popina, where I specialised in product development for the likes of Highgrove House, Daylesford Organic, and Sharpham Park.
By the age of 26 I had gained priceless experience & expertise, but I had also grown frustrated with a catering industry that was prioritising margins and cost-cutting over quality ingredients and using plenty of them. So, in the midst of the recession, with just a credit card to my name and unshakeable determination, I decided to take matters back into my own hands. I saw a gap in the market for a unique, luxury dessert brand, where ingredients and quality would be paramount, and The Dessert Deli was born.
The Dessert Deli
I started the business from my friend’s spare room which I had converted into a makeshift kitchen. I would bake all day and night, and then have to take two trips in my small car to my first ever market stall on Balham’s Hildreth Street Market. As a sole-trader, it was incredibly hard work. But I was following my passion and establishing a dedicated local following – I could see people believed in my dream.
I now have an amazing, hand-picked team. We have enjoyed fantastic organic growth which I believe is down to ‘word of mouth’ from our loyal customers and our ethos of using the best ingredients we can source, lovingly hand making all of our products, and consistency. This ethos has led to our products being stocked in premium food halls over the years, including Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, Whole Foods Market and Fortnum & Mason, and having once-in-a-lifetime opportunities including catering thousands and thousands of cupcakes for the London Olympics in 2012.
As well as working with fantastic corporate clients to support their events and activities, I still sell directly to our beloved customers every Saturday at Northcote Road Market in Clapham Junction. I just love to see our regulars’ smiling faces week in, week out – it’s why I do what I do.
To this day, we create everything lovingly by hand, with the utmost care and attention to detail. With every fold, stir and sprinkle, we commit to:
Use only the finest quality ingredients, British where possible.
Make every batch taste as great as the last.
Source the ideal packaging for beautiful presentation.
Work closely with our customers to deliver their perfect result.
So whatever the occasion, and whoever you are with, you can enjoy ‘Absolutely Amazing’ desserts – creating special moments, at affordable prices.
